Journal / Magazine Articles

ABI Inform

  • start with Basic Search and note subjects assigned to articles of interest to you; then use Advanced Search mode to get more targeted results.
  • specify: geographic location (e.g. China),  company/organization (Wal-mart) , subject (eg. market entry market strategy, international markets).
  • use following  strategies  in Advanced Search mode for articles that will help you identify companies with foreign investment :
    1. foreign investment (Subject) 
      multinational corporations or joint ventures (subject)
      set date period
    2. foreign operations of US corporations (subject)
      market entry (subject)
      set date period
  • best to search for articles on specific industries utilizing abstract/citation field.
  • narrow by type of publication (scholarly journals, trade publications, newspapers, magazines).
  • narrow by Reference/Reports to get Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) reports.

Business Source Complete

  • specify: geographic terms (e.g. China), company / entity (Wal-mart).
  • note: while subject searching is available, it is not as good as with ABI as few subject terms are assigned to articles. Note also that subject terms used are NOT NECESSARILY the same as used by ABI.
  • best to search for articles on specific industries utilizing abstract/author supplied abstract field.
  • narrow by type of publication (scholarly journals, magazines) - Note that newspaper articles are included in ALL Results.
  • Country Economic Data and Industry reports are also available.

CBCA

  • covers Canadian magazines, news sources (eg. newswires, CTV transcripts), trade publications and journals.
  • will have overlap with ABI and BSP, but, will have unique coverage from Canadian trade publications and some news sources.
  • same search interface as ABI Inform.
 

Newspaper Articles

Canadian Newstand

  • local newspapers are good sources for stories about the activities of a local company, including its overseas operations.
  • covers newspapers (big and small) from all over the country, i.e. National Post, Edmonton Journal, Kamloops Daily News.  NOTE: covers the Globe & Mail from 1999 to present day.
  • same search interface as ABI Inform; best to use Basic key word searching as subject terms rarely assigned to newspaper articles.
  • can narrow search to specific newspaper: do Publication search (e.g. Edmonton Journal), select Search Within Publication tab, then do keyword search.

Factiva

  • provides articles from thousands of newspapers  and newswires around the world.
  • use for pre 1999 Globe & Mail articles
  • best to try and narrow search as much as possible: can narrow geographically, by industry, by source (i.e. specific newspaper), by organization, and by really broad subject categories.  If using subject category, you may also want to add specific keywords in search box.
