Library Exhibit

Come join us for this exciting exhibit that explores the links between the popular Harry Potter book series and the history of science and medicine. The University of Alberta is the only Canadian stop on the NLM's "Harry Potter's World" exhibit travelling tour.

Location: John W. Scott Health Sciences Library, 2K3.28 Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre. Please see below for directions.

Dates: January 15, 2012 - February 25, 2012

If you have questions about the exhibit, please contact Trish Chatterley at 780-492-7933.

The exhibition panels were developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health.

"In 1997, British author J. K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter and a literary phenomenon was born. Millions of readers have followed Harry to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he discovers his heritage, encounters new plants and animals, and perfects his magical abilities. Although a fantasy story, the magic in the Harry Potter books is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science, including alchemy, astrology, and natural philosophy. Incorporating the work of several 15th- and 16th-century thinkers, this six-panel exhibit... explores Harry Potter's world and its roots in Renaissance magic, science, and medicine."  -NLM's Exhibition website

While at the John W. Scott Health Sciences Library, you may also want to visit the Rawlinson Rare Book Collection in the Phyllis Russell Rare Book Room. Several works will be on display in the exhibit cases, but many other historical pieces may be of interest. To access the collection, simply approach a staff member at the main service desk.
