Getting Started
Welcome to the Native Studies Research Guide!
Native Studies and research into indigenous topics are, by their very nature, interdisciplinary in character. This guide will serve as a starting point for your research, and you will also be able to use information resources in other areas such as health, education, law, government and women’s studies.
Thinking critically about the information you use is important in all areas of research. When considering an information source it is useful to consider who created it, what their credentials are, why it was created, when it was created. When researching indigenous topics this is particularly important. Colonization and marginalization of many native cultures mean that information about them was often created by others. When you assess who created the information and for what purpose, it is useful to bear in mind the worldview of the author and the methods used to gather and disseminate the information.
For help with your research, contact a Service Desk or your Native Studies liaison librarian.
