Rutherford Library

(Rutherford Library - photo by Randy Reichardt)Rutherford Library is the largest library on campus with almost two million volumes and the second largest research library in Canada.

The collection consists of books, periodicals, government publications, electronic indexes and microformats supporting the study, teaching and research needs of students and faculty in the humanities and social sciences.

Named after the first provincial premier and former university chancellor, Alexander Cameron Rutherford (1857-1941), the Rutherford Library complex consists of two buildings joined by a sky-lighted galleria. Rutherford North is the newer building and Rutherford South is the older building.  For more information on the history of the Rutherford Library, click here and here.

Rutherford North houses the majority of the library's collection on five floors.  It is where you will find:

  • Service Desk (1st floor) - ask us for help
  • Reserve Room (1st floor) - find reserve reading material for your courses
  • Reference (1st floor) and Reference Auxiliary (2nd floor)
  • Data Library (1st floor) - find, use and get help with data files
  • Music Library (2nd floor) - find sound recordings, printed music, books about music, and much more!
  • Bibliography Room (3rd floor) - includes national catalogues and government publication catalogues

Rutherford South is home to:

  • Bruce Peel Special Collections Library (lower level)
  • Administration offices (1st floor)
  • Computer labs (2nd floor)
  • Study Hall and Reading Room (a.k.a "The Harry Potter Room" - 2nd floor)
