Use keywords that describe the type of document - try limiting to the subject field where appropriate: 

• diaries OR letters
• correspondence OR "personal narratives"
• speeches OR addresses
• documents OR sources

e.g. 
Africa AND sources AND (17th century or 18th century)
slave* AND (letters or correspondence or personal narratives or sources) AND "18th century"

Search for historical entities as authors - limit to the author field. e.g. Church of England
