Patents and Trademarks

General Guidelines

As with all citations, references to patents should include all the information necessary for your reader to locate the patent themselves. This will typically include the patent number, patent title, country where the patent was issued, year, and owner, inventor or assignee. If you aren't able to find an example for the citation style you are using, follow another example from that style, but use the patent owner as the "Author," the patent title as the "Source Title," the country as the "Publisher," and the date issued as the "Publication Date."

ACS Format

General format: Inventor 1; Inventor 2; ...;Inventor 10; et. al. Title of Patent. Patent or application number (preceded by the country code and followed by the kind code, if listed in the source document), document publication year. Provided by name of database, accession/record identification number.

APA Format

General format: Patent owner. (Year). Patent Number. Location: Patent office.

IEEE Format

General format: Name of the invention, by inventor's name. (year, month day). Patent number [type of medium]. Available: site/path/file.

Vancouver and AMA

General format: Inventor1, Inventor2, et al, inventors; Name of assignee, assignee. Title of Patent. patent number (include country code, the word "patent," and number with retained commas). Date of publication.
