Getting Started

These resources can help provide definitions and offer authoritative overviews of topics in your field. They are a great place to start your research.

Searching the Library Catalogue

To find relevant resources, search the library using the subject terms below as a guide. You can combine the searches with keywords from your topic.

Subject field:

  • women's studies
  • women--social conditions
  • gender identity
  • queer theory
  • social history
  • intersectionality
  • feminis* (the asterisk will search for works that contain the terms 'feminism' and 'feminist')
  • gender and sexuality

A note on subject headings

Subject headings are a controlled vocabulary that are used to describe books, articles, and other resources. These terms are not locally determined, but are maintained by institutions such as the Library of Congress. As such, some terminology may be outdated, inaccurate, or biased. UAlberta Library has published a statement on harmful language in the library catalogue.
