U of A Library Search Guide

Using the Advanced Search

Advanced Search allows you to:

  1. Combine multiple search fields: Search by specific fields like title, author, subject, ISBN/ISSN, etc.

  2. Specify search types: Choose options contains, contains exact phrase, or starts with for more control over how your keywords are matched.

  3. Apply filters before searching: Set limits like material type, date, or language.
Note: When you've selected to search in the Library Catalogue, you may also limit to a physical library location, such as Rutherford, Cameron, or Sperber, etc. This limits your search to physical items only (items on the shelves in the library collections).

  4. Adding new lines: You can add up to 8 more search lines to add more criteria.

Example of an Advanced Search

Let's say you're looking articles published in the last five years about the impact of social media on teenagers.

You could set up your advanced search like this:

  • Set your search to Search for: Articles
  • Row 1: Search Field: Subject; Search Type: contains; Search Term: social media
  • Row 2: Boolean Operator: AND; Search Field: Subject; Search Type: contains; Search Term: teenagers
  • Add Filters: Start Date: 01-01-2020; End Date: 31-12-2025
