Gender Expression: External appearance of one's gender identity, usually expressed through behaviour, clothing, haircut or voice, and which may or may not conform to socially defined behaviours and characteristics typically associated with being either masculine or feminine.

Sex Assigned at Birth: The assignment and classification of people as male, female, intersex, or another sex based on a combination of anatomy, hormones, chromosomes.

Search Support

Starting your search can seem daunting, but we can help you break things down into steps and give you some tips:

  • Check out our Foundational Tutorials (available in English et en Français!)
  • Use "quotation marks" to keep your search terms together (e.g. "gender expression" will search for instances where those two words appear next to each other).
  • Use *asterisks to search for words that have the same root (e.g. "gender identit*" searches "gender identity" as well as "gender identities").
  • If you have more specific questions, just Ask Us! Our library staff are more than happy to help you out.

The following are keyword search results from 300+ databases. Results include academic journal articles, ebooks, books, magazine/news articles, reviews, etc. These keywords, and any others you are interested in for your research, can also be searched in the journals and databases listed on this page.
